like something is going to happen
is the ocean trying to tell me something, or just trying to swallow me away?
I just turn back to find how this world elude me

First Dance Lesson!
Well, technically it was our second, because the field trip to the studio counted as the first! We just wanted to tell you all how proud we were of you today. You did a truly amazing job and followed directions really well. I can already tell we are going to grow a lot as a class through this program. Those of you who were feeling uncomfortable participating today, please give it a try on Friday. I promise you'll have fun!
Remember, our next dance class is on Friday at 8:00...you need to get to school on time!

Inspiration for the Quiz tomorrow!
We know a lot of you are feeling nervous about the Math quiz we are going to have tomorrow, and that is understandable, this is hard stuff! We want to remind you how well you are doing though. The class average in Math right now is an 82%! On the last quiz, 19 out of 20 students received Mastery on standard 8.N.2!
This is awesome news. You really are learning. For a lot of you, this type of success might be something new, something you haven't experienced in a few years. You should be really proud of the hard work you have put in so far, but remember, you cannot give up just because things start to get a little harder!
8th grade Math is hard, and it will continue to get harder - but giving up is not an option. You need to continue to show us the commitment we saw from you so far this year.

Answer:I think a teachers quality to be able to have teaching skills because they can't come to work and don't have nothing to teach the students. A teacher have an quality to understand a student and to know how to help a student when they need help with their classwork or to do anything that deals with what the class is working on. another is that they should be able to have organize work to give the students when they come to school and is ready to do work and to finish everything .A teacher should have patientence for when a student needs to finish his or her work at least give them some time to finish or give in the work to the teacher.

Become Your Dream

Hi Class-
I'm sitting with Ms. Rodriguez at a Cosi. I wanted to touch base with you guys because I just got an e-mail that reminded me of you.
A woman named Kaycee, who came to visit several times this year and last, sent out an e-mail with a picture she took while walking home last night. We will spend some time talking about in class on Monday, but I wanted to throw it up on the blog for you to look at this weekend.
I also wanted to touch base with you about your grades. Ms. Miranda and I submitted our grades to Mr. DeCastro last night. So many of you got high 80s and 90s...a true demonstration of your commitment to being the success that lives in our classroom. Comparing these grades to the ones you got only 6 months ago is very impressive. We can NOT wait to share your successes with your parents and guardians at parent/teacher conferences.
Getting back to business:
-9 steps this weekend ( 2 hours and 15 minutes of reading)
-Newsblasts (both sides) www.timeforkids.com is a great resource. The articles are written between 4-6th grade levels. Please write in complete sentences.
-Math reflection on the fire hydrant problem
We'll be taking a predictive state ela test on Monday. And, the top 5 are getting a trip to the upper east side...where we'll have some cold stone! I think I might be more excited than you!! Think about your flavors in advance...Birthday Cake Remix is my absolute favorite!! http://www.coldstonecreamery.com/

Fun Transition Games!
Today we split the class into two sections for math. The group with Ms. Skrzypchak did an excellent job! The majority of the students who stayed in the room did a great job, but a few students were off task which was a disappointment.
We left 10 minutes at the end of class to play 7-up which was a lot of fun, if our behavior is good, we will make time for transition games every day between Math and Writing!
Keep up the good work 820!
Love,
Ms. M and Ms. S

"The Ghost"
"Boo", said the ghost,But it really didn't scare,'Cause I couldn't take my eyes,Off his vivid ginger hair. It's really not the same,If head to toe's not white.Well, it isn't going to work,When they try to spook and fright. But he tried and he tried,Even though the cause was lost. And he even sprayed it silver,Like a pumpkin tinged with frost. But I suppose I shouldn't laugh,As he puffs
and sighs and moans. So I told him what to do......a white wig he now owns!
"Wayward Werewolf"
As the moon came up,The wolf sat down.Tonight he can't just roam around. It's just not fair,It can't be right! For mum to keep him in tonight. He should be out,He should be prowling. But instead he sits here scowling. For he's been bad,He's made a mess. He's ripped and torn his sunday best!

Terrific Test Taking Day!
We want to congratulate everyone on a very nice day! Everyone did an excellent job on the ELA Predictive exam. This makes us really excited because we can use that information as data to tell us what to teach you from now until January!
We were also really impressed with your work in SS 7th period. You settled down from lunch well, and did a great job. The students who were in the small group began a great discussion that I am excited to continue with tomorrow.
During 8th period Ms. Skrzypchak and I talked to my teacher, Ms. Burr, who came in to visit 7th period. She told us that this classroom felt like a learning environment, and that is because of all the hard work that YOU do. She said that our students were doing really great work, and we all think that you are ready to handle more challenges!
We have the highest expectations for you, and it is your job to do everything in your power to meet and exceed them!
Love,
Ms. Miranda and Ms. Skrzypchak

Predictive Test Tomorrow
Remember, starting today you are expected to read 45 minutes a night, not 30. Expect a phone call home if you consistently read under 45 minutes per night. We have big goals this year, and each of you are capable of making two years of reading growth in just one year. The best way to do this is to READ, BABY READ!
I'm so excited for you to take your ELA predictive tomorrow! It will give us a great opportunity to see your strengths and weaknesses. . . so we can get you ready for the REAL test.
Good work today! You're impressive students.
Go to sleep early. Eat a good breakfast. Relax.
Night :)

Ideas for 820
I think that this school should have a fund raiser to raise money for an amusement park for the senior trip. I also think that one day class 820 should go camping in Vermont. Our school should have more projects and talent shows for people who loves to sing, act, model, dance, or rap etc. Our schools should have more assemblies and have high school kids come in like the kids from Kappa International did. We should also be able to visit alot of universities and visit some high schools of our choice. There should also be a day that is Twin day or wacky tacky day (a day when we dress colorful) and 70's day ( a day when we dress like the 70s).
I think thats we should probably things like do more surveys for people who like to make decision or don't know what to chose on what people like.

Tuesday, October 14th
You have a number of assignments to complete tonight.
As a heads up, starting next week you will be required to read 3 steps a night, instead of two. This means that you should read 45 minutes a night, instead of 30. Most of you already read more than that, so it shouldn't be a problem.
Math: Unit 2 Lesson 3 Solving Inequalities Homework
ELA: Complete your Inference Worksheet
Social Studies: None, we will continue Road to Civil War Lesson 4 tomorrow
Community:
-Return your permission slip for Sunday's trip to the High School Fair. If you have a friend in another 8th grade class, they are welcome to come as well. Make sure you let Ms. Miranda or Ms. Skrzypchak know so we can get you a permission slip
-Return your permission slip for the info session for parents (Next Monday at 10am and 6pm)
-BLUE CARDS (turn them in if you haven't done so already.) They were due two weeks ago.

New Seating Arrangement
We wanted to let you all know that when you come in tomorrow morning you will see that we have rearranged the desks in our room. We are really excited about the new seats and we think you will love them too! We are going to try a U shape instead of the group seating. Some of your classmates including Kenny, Lasheeda, Steven, and Saul helped us with this new arrangement.
The important thing to remember is that we want you to learn the most you possibly can every single day. We don't want any distractions in our room because we have a lot of growth to make this year. We are hoping that the new seats will help us all to focus and learn.
We look forward to seeing you tomorrow morning!

Wednesday, October 8th
Hi my name is Ameera and I just wanted to tell you how my day was today.this was the worsest day I had in school since the first day of school.today we was sopposed to finish our lesson but the class was not quite so we are far away behind.i wish we will be able to like have peace for one day and the students to actually be ahead of some classes in the school.OH YEAH I ALMOST FORGOT,REMINDERS THERE IS NO SCHOOL TOMORROW THAT IS OCTOBER 9TH 2008.my teacher said really cool things yesterday and i was very exited and i was looking forward to get to that level.she told us about the homework thing, she said the first 5 people to fill the homework scholars will go to the ice cream place that is really cool.these stuff are really easy to achive and di am ready to compleate my goal.
When we walk into class in the morning,we have to come to school before 8:05 and when you get to the front door of the class room , you have to shake either Ms.Miranda or Ms.Skrzypchaks hand. You have to make eye contact to the teacher to make sure that you came to school ready to learn. When you come to your seat, you have to take out your homework, planner and your 100 Book Challenge sheet for Ms. Skrzypchak to check it so you can get a grade. All the students have to put their jackets and book bags in the closet.
If you come late to school, you have to just go to your seat and start on your work or to tell your teacher what the class is starting on. When you come late you automatically get 2 ramps points off and will get tracked on a posted board on the window for you to see.

Great Work!
Very impressive work on the blog today!
You are always welcome to write on the blog! To do so, put a note on the parking lot, and include the topic you are going to write about. You can write about nearly anything you want!
For Social Studies, please remember to study up on the two acts we talked about today, the Fugitive Slave Act and the Kansas-Nebraska Act.
The transition at the end of the day was not acceptable. I think Angel's post speaks to that. It is important to note that 95% of you did the right thing. At the end of the day there is a lot going on. You are wrapping up with Science, some people stay for Tempus Ultra, some people stay to ask questions and everyone else is trying to head home. Please remember, if you are staying after..do it respectfully. If you are heading out, leave quickly and quietly. Our room is a safe space, and a space that always needs to be productive. Today, for nearly 15 minutes that was not the case. We can not tolerate that in our classroom. Success always needs to live here.
In other news, my mom sent you all a ton of candy! Expect to see it on your desk in a variety of ways over the next few days (that means do the right thing.)
For the most part, I'm leaving all smiles this afternoon. You guys continue to impress all of us more and more each day. Keep working hard!!
:)
Love,
Ms. Skrzypchak

MATH UNIT TEST
Know that class 820 has taken their first unit test (unit test 1) they are working on their reflection which is asking questions like how do they fell about the test and also about the past few standards they have been working on like: Verbal expressions (8.a.2), adding and subtracting Integers (7.a.2) solving multi-step equations (7.a.4) these standards have been working with class 820 for the past weeks and have improved throughout the first few weeks of school.
In E.L.A the students in class 820 are working on the 4 types of writing strategies like: 1). inner thinking 2). action 3).dialogue 4).description. In yesterday e.l.a lesson the journal question was how much homework do you think you should have each night?why? DEFEND your thoughts. in my journal i wrote '' I think that the class should have at least 2 homework's per night and no home work on Friday's.
In social studies the class is on working the civil war and the people that have past through it the class is working on a project that have included people that were important to the start of the war in particualr Dred Scott, John Brown and Abraham Lincoln.

A few quick reminders about the flow of the day for tomorrow.
Tomorrow you'll enter the classroom by 8:05, you'll start the morning off by reviewing math with Ms. Miranda. We won't have a blast from the past. At 8:20 we will head down to the auditorium.
One of my good friends will be coming (along with 15 of her students!!) to talk to you about the high school she teaches at. The school is at the Roosevelt Campus, on Fordham Road. The website is below! Do some research and come prepared with questions!
http://www.kappainternational.org/home.aspx
The presentation to RECRUIT YOU will last from 8:30-9:30. We'll head up for the Writing block and then transition to ELA. In ELA you'll take your math quiz instead of an English Energizer. We'll hand back your informational essay revisions (I have them in my bag to edit tonight!!) and write our final drafts. I spoke with Mr. Bissonnette, and hopefully we'll get to type them up on the iBooks! (Cross your fingers!)
Everyone was so impressed with your amazing behavior with the 100 Book Challenge advisor this afternoon. Be very proud of yourselves for an excellent step! I know Ms. Miranda and I will hear about your excellence from other teachers for the next few days.
Please remember, you need to come to school prepared every single day. This means:
-your planner is filled out and signed by an adult
-you've read at least two steps (four on the weekend)
-homework for EVERY subject is complete
After helping a few people with math after school, I want to remind all of you to study for the quiz tomorrow. The biggest problem we seem to have is RUSHING through the problems. Take your time, check your work. Don't make silly mistakes. If you have questions tonight please feel free to let us know.
Proud to be your teacher,
Ms. Skrzypchak
PS If you went on the blog and read this tonight, please post back with at least two complete sentences....to get an extra credit point on tomorrow's math test! :)
brand new day
the sun is shining
birds are singing
i am smiling
thinking of you and no one else
the world is for us and no one else
can't believe today is the day
that me and you are going out to play :]

Clean Machines!
It's such a beautiful day outside! Excellent work in class today, especially Social Studies! I am so proud of all the specific information you recalled about the period leading up to the American Revolution!
It's important to remember that we will dump out your desk if we think it is too messy. You shouldn't have ANY papers out of folders or binders.
Here are some quick examples...

So, we all know whose desk this is. (Don't blame Stephen, he is just there posting on the blog.) But, there are a lot of problems with this large, very messy desk. There are papers everywhere. Someone could walk by and spill them. There is also no room to work! This desk is not setting a good example.

Moving on, the next desk has quite a few major problems! FIRST...the greatest book in the entire world...ACCESS American History is sticking out of the desk. Remember, our text books have a spot on the shelf near my desk. Books should be stacked 13 high under their label. If you need to use the fabulous book outside of Social Studies, you must ask. The glorious books can't be stored in your backpack OR desk! There's also some random papers sticking out, and the binders are not neatly stacked.
This desk is perfect. I can tell this person took their 100 Book Challenge Folder and Homework Folder home with them tonight. If a teacher ever needs something from this desk, it will be very easy to find!

Keep working hard!
Remember, you will lose 2 RAMPS points each day for:
-being late
-not having a uniform
-not reading for 100 Book Challenge
-not bringing a signed planner
Goodnight! Please remember to call or e-mail Ms. Miranda or I for any homework questions! YOU are our number one priority.
I am very proud to be one of your teachers.
Love,
Ms. Skrzypchak

High School Fair!!!
We'll be meeting outside the main doors of school at 9:30 tomorrow morning to go to the high school fair. The fair takes place at Brooklyn Technical High School, which is right off the 4 train in Brooklyn.
There are over 1,000 schools in NYC, and you have to pick your top 12. The fair will have students, teachers and principals from the city's high schools. You'll be able to ask specific questions and get information from all of the schools.
We should be back to school by 2pm.
If you want to go, please bring the following:
-the permission slip I handed out or have your parents write a note. If you want to get dismissed from the train station, you need to make that clear on your note.
-$4 or a subway card. We will use the subway two times, once on the way there and once on the way back
-Money or food to eat for lunch
-A backpack or folder for all the information you'll collect
-a notebook or not pad/pen to take notes!

hi I'm Tarra and i am going to tell you what i think about the rules for class 820.i think that the rules for 820 is kind of good because if a student come into a new class and don't know what to do.Like if you walk into a class and the class is starting something new you have to give them a follow up on anything. But i think that the class rules are okay for now.So we have to help them a lot just like the teachers be helping you.
Hi i am Ameera and i am just here to say how happy i am to be in class 820.this class is very good because we are the only class that has two teachers teaching at the same the same time.you see that means we have all the full attention we need.this class is very cool.

**For extra credit (Lasheeda's idea) you can write in the location of all four oceans
-Be able to answer:
-what city we live in
-what state we live in
-what country we live in
-what continent we live in
-the difference between a continent and an ocean
-the difference between a city and a continent
about me
Hi everyone. Let me start off by saying that I'm 13 years old and my birthday is on February 20. Which makes me Pisces. I'm a very talented and fun person. I love to sing, act, dance and model. I also love going shopping and hanging out with my friends and family. I like school but i just don't like waking up in the morning. I'm not much of a morning person. I'm excited because in this year , we are going to high school which is a big step in a kids life. The high school that i want to go to is either La Guardia or Talent Unlimited. The reason why i want to go to La Guardia is because when i get older i want to be famous! But in order for me to achieve my dreams i have to stay in school go to a good college. The colleges that i want to go to is Bmcc,{my sister goes there}Middle Bury or Columbia university. My main goals for this year is to get into a good high school, to do good in school, to graduate and to help my mom. I'm a very funny and outgoing person. My favorite singers are Chris Brown, Beyonce, Jordin Sparks, Rihanna, etc. I thank all my teachers for helping me and for not letting me give up. =]
~ SUCCESS LIVES HERE~R
my life
Hi my name is maria Alejandra figuereo. I am 12 years old and i was born in the Dominican republic.I was born in a little village called Vicente noble where people had to work hard to get a better future. My moms name is YENNIS ALTANIS REYES and my fathers name is ANTONIO FIGUEREO.My parents got separated when i was 6 months old.My mom decided to move to new york where my grandmother lived. When we moved my mom got a job at a chocolate factory with 2 of her friends and my aunt. The factory offered my mom a job in Spain and my mom accepted the job,i knew that my mom accepted the job for me.When my mom left my grandmother decided to send me back to DOMINICAN republic to start my education there.
Hernandez we became very good friends but when we went we passed to third grade we got split up.There i met my second best friend called Vicky Garcia we became good friends as well but when we passed to fourth grade we got split up,the teachers thought that i learned English better than Vicky so they send to a all English class. There i met the funnest teacher ever called ms. When i was 5 years old my grandmother went to DOMINICAN republic to go and pick me up to bring me back to NEW YORK.When we got back from DOMINICAN REPUBLIC my grandmother put me in a school called public school 90. there i had a very hard time because i didn't understand English at that time but soon i started get used to it until i got to first grade.I started to talk a little bit of English and it was funny because i talked the language very bad but i got the hang of it.when i was in second grade i had my first best friend called shakiramorales and the meanest teacher ms.Serrano.Me and shakira got back together in the same class but me and Vicky didn't.
When i passed to5Th grade i met ms.Horowitz and i met an lot of other kids but suddenly my behavior got a little out of hand i strated to behave really bad like screaming at the teacher and walking out of the class etc... but then i said to my self that i should'nt be like that.
Now i am in the 8th grade and my mom came back from Spain and i am very happy with my family and my teachers.
2nd Math Quiz Tomorrow!
This means you will need to know how to translate math sentences into word sentences and word sentences into math sentences. For example: "8n = 24" would translate into "the product of 8 and a number is 24".
You will also need to know how to combine like terms. Remember apples and apples, not apples and oranges! So 2y + 4y = 6y, but you cannot combine 3x + 81 because they are not like terms.
Your homework for tonight is Practice 1-1 page 179, page 180 is extra credit.

Success live's here continuasion
Success lives here is our motto because all of the student in this classroom can and/or are successful in anything they do. When we come to class we have to have uniform on and we shake the teachers hand. The morning routine is that we put our planner's and homework on the corner of the table and start the blast from the past. Everything in the class has a place the backpack go in the back closet's also all the student's have an assinged seat where they need to sit unless their moved or get permission to move. The E.L.A flow is that we get 5 minutes of free time then we get the english energizer after the energizer do a journal entry and the mini lesson and finally 100 book challenge. The math flow starts with the blast from the past we do homework review last we do the mini lesson and transfer to writing or gym.
Rules For Class 820
I am writing this essay to you about when you walk in to class 820.If a new student walked into the class 820,i would tell them that the class is doing a system routine called R.A.M.P.S.which means(Respect/Assignments/Motivation/Participation/Supplies) to tell them that we are doing that everyday in all grades and it all counts to going on a trip or going to other fun places in school. If a new student came into our class,I would show them what to do when you havbe to use the bathroom or to go get a drink of water at the fountain also show them what sign you have to use in order to go there if you have an emergency.I would tell them what to do when you are transitioning to any other periods like to take out your things. The ramps points thing that you have to behave a certian way to earn points then to lose any of your points some ramps points everyday when you come to school,in the classroom with all the students. The planners.I would tell that person that you always have to write the homework down and to have a parent or guardian to sign your planner and to bring it in to school to have the teacher check it along with your homework. When you look at the flow of the day,its lets you know that what period it is in the day while you are at school everyday.
Wednesday, September 17
Over the next few days you'll see the brainstorming and collecting of information for our very first writing assignment. For ELA (English Langauge Arts) we will be writing Informative Essays. Our goal is to write an essay for next year's class 820. Students must include all of the rules/procedures/mottos of our class!
I'm so impressed with the work I've seen so far, the top students for each part of our 9 step writing process will put their work on the blog!

what i remember from todays lesson is....
today in Social Studies we was learning about the features in a Political and physical maps.
Also, in math class we was finishing our Blast from the past and we continued talking about integers. In ELA we was working on the English Energizers. In ELA we was filling out the EE trackers and that is a sheet that you have to track your grades for every English Energizers you've done. In math we was also learning about the Distributive property and about algebraic expressions. We was also learning about the verbal expressions. We was also learning the definitions for the words Variable, Algebraic expressions, Equation and Open sentences. I also remember from todays class work, that we was talking about which map can we find countries and continents on. The answer for that is physical and political maps.

One Week Down!
A few quick reminders:
-When you miss school:
-you need to bring in a note ahead of time if it's possible.
-if you know you are going to be absent at the last minute, you need to call one of your teachers sometime during that day, and bring a note in the next day
-these notes will go on file for you, in case they are needed later on in the school year
-Planners:
-It is expected that you bring your planner, signed, every morning
-Your planner should look exactly like the one we fill out as a class, on the board
-We do this so you can practice keeping track of all of your assignments
-You lose 2 RAMPS points each day you forget your planner, or forget to have it signed
Lastly, we have the best class in the 8th Grade! All of our visitors are so impressed! Remember, we are the model classroom, and people will continue to stop in throughout the year.

Welcome Back!
We're excited to be teaching you Math, ELA and Social Studies this year! It's going to be a lot of work, but a lot of fun too!!
Tuesday we're going to be going over the basics, so we can have a productive year.
We also have an awesome trip planned on Friday! We're going to be the only class in the whole school that gets to go on a field trip the first week of school! Ms. Jelinek and my friend Karina will be coming on the trip too. (Karina came at the end of the year last year. She brought you all donuts!)
It's always hard to fall asleep the night before the first day! Try to get some rest, we have a lot to do tomorrow!!
I can't wait!!
Love,
Ms. Skrzypchak
